Northamptonshire Steelbacks lost their first game of the ongoing T20 Blast against Leicestershire by 4 wickets. They are currently at the seventh position in the points table after failing to defend the total of 218 runs and will be looking to improve going forward in the tournament. In a bid to strengthen their batting line up the franchise has now signed a deal with Scotland skipper Kyle Coetzer.

Coetzer recently led Scotland to a memorable victory over England in the one-off One-Day International last month. Calum MacLeod played a memorable knock of 140 runs in that game, while the captain lent him a decent support by scoring 58 runs opening the innings for his team. They posted a mammoth total of 371 runs while batting first and then restricted England only 6 runs short of the target to register a historic victory.

He is a good T20 player

Kyle Coetzer was previously part of the Northamptonshire squad between 2011 and 2015. He also played a crucial role for them in 2013 when the team had famously lifted the title in the shortest format. Coetzer brings a lot of T20 pedigree with him having played 106 matches amassing 2324 runs at a decent strike-rate of 114.14.

The head coach of Northamptonshire David Ripley welcomed the 34-year-old and believed that his experience will be important for the team this season in the absence of some key players due to injuries.

“Kyle is a good T20 player and with us missing a few experienced players like Adam Rossington, Rob Newton and Rob Keogh through injury having someone like Kyle in the squad will be good for us. We’re looking forward to welcoming Kyle back to the County Ground for the next few weeks,” he was quoted as saying by Cricket World.

Coetzer will be available with immediate effect for the Steelbacks and has been included in the squad for their next game against Nottinghamshire Outlaws on Friday.
