Australia have started the T20 World Cup on a resounding note as they beat South Africa by five wickets on Saturday, October 23, at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The game was a low-scoring affair as the game went right down to the last over. In the end, the Aussies won with two balls left. The Proteas bowlers tried their hearts out after the batters flattered to deceive, but their efforts went in vain.

Bowlers strangle South Africa

After electing to field first, the Aussies restricted South Africa to 118 for nine in 20 overs. Barring Aiden Markram, who made a 36-ball 40, the other batters couldn’t quite step up. Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen fell cheaply. Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller got starts, but none could convert. Kagiso Rabada’s 19 made sure that the Proteas get past the 100-run mark.

Josh Halzewood was the standout Australia bowler as he picked up the crucial wickets of De Kock and Van der Dussen. Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa also picked up two wickets apiece. Pat Cummins accounted for only one scalp, but he bowled 14 dots at an economy of 4.25. Spinner Glenn Maxwell gave the Aussies their first breakthrough after he rattled Bavuma’s woodwork.

Australia get past the line

The Aussies didn’t make a great start to their run-chase as Anrich Nortje pinned Aaron Finch for a five-ball duck. Kagiso Rabada then jolted the Aussies after he sent David Warner back to the hurt. Mitchell Marsh was excellent on the tours of West Indies and Bangladesh, being the leading run-scorer both times. From there on, Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell restored sanity in the innings.

Smith was excellent as he made a 34-ball 35 with three fours. He also top-scored for the Men in Yellow. The duo stitched together a partnership of 42 runs for the fourth wicket off seven balls. Marcus Stoinis scored 24 off 16 balls at a critical stage to take Australia over the line. Matthew Wade also chipped in with a 10-ball 15 at a stage when South Africa were well and truly in the game.
