In the aftermath of the recently concluded Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Comilla Victorians’ skipper Tamim Iqbal came under heavy criticism for hurling negative comments. Making poor indications about pitches and outfield during the BPL, Tamim faced disciplinary actions from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). And on the very first day of the new year, BCB announced its hearing.

However, it hasn’t been a welcoming start to the new year as the Bangladesh opener has been fined Tk 5 lakh for criticizing the Mirpur wicket heavily during the BPL. Following a low scoring match between Comilla Victorians and Rangpur Riders, Tamim in the press conference scrutinized the wicket. The 28-year-old also questioned the ability of the curators which broke the code of conduct implying a disciplinary action against him.

Sabbir suspended for six months

On the other hand, Bangladesh all-rounder Sabbir Rahman has been penalized heavily for assaulting a fan. The 26-year-old lost his cool after a supporter instigated him with noises during an innings break on the second day of Rajshahi Division’s National Cricket League game against Dhaka Metropolis.

Sabbir suffered most after Monday’s hearing. He has been stripped of the national contract, fined Tk 20 lakh and banned from domestic cricket for six months.

Last chance for Rahman

The decision was taken following BCB president Nazmul Hasan’s meeting with disciplinary committee vice-chairman Sheikh Sohel and BCB chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury. Sabbir regretted his action during the hearing but it failed to impress the BCB high-ups as he had other disciplinary issues, prompting the disciplinary committee to recommended strict action.

Speaking about the judgment, Sheikh Sohel said, “We felt that he didn’t learn anything from his past two punishments,” Sohel said. “We have meted out a heavy punishment. He is out of the national contract, which is a huge blow. He is also fined Tk 20 lakh. But this is his last chance. If he has another brush with indiscipline, he will be permanently suspended.”
