With the T20 format gaining popularity with every passing day, the existence of Test cricket around the world has become an increasing worry. The stands still remain empty in India and some part of the world during the Test matches and in complete contrast, each and every match of the T20 leagues are sold out. The former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has expressed his concern about the same while also saying that the cricket’s traditional format is fortunate to have a player like Virat Kohli.
World’s number one player currently loves playing the longest format of the game and he has time and again reiterated the fact that Test cricket tests one as a cricketer. He loves playing for five consecutive and it is no surprise that he is most involved in the game while on the field in whites. In the recently concluded England Test series, he amassed close to 600 runs in 10 outings when the other batters struggled to come to the terms.
He’s most driven while playing a Test match
Sanjay Manjrekar was quite animated while speaking at the ninth Dilip Sardesai Memorial Lecture at the Cricket Club of India on Monday. He expressed his concern about the Test format which is losing its popularity very fast. But at the same time, was happy that the Indian captain and cricket’s biggest brand Virat Kohli promotes the game in whites.
“Test cricket is so fortunate that today’s cricket’s biggest brand Virat Kohli loves Test cricket and puts his heart and soul into it. To my eyes, he’s most driven when he’s playing Test match cricket,” he was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Meanwhile, he also took a dig at the BCCI for not playing day-night Test matches which is likely to attract more viewership. Cricket Australia (CA) had requested the BCCI to agree for such a Test match during their upcoming tour, but they rejected it.
