Sunrisers Hyderabad’s campaign in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 has been nothing but a rollercoaster. After suffering defeats in their first two games, the Orange Army made a remarkable comeback and recorded five victories on the trot. However, tables turned for them once again as SRH lost their next five games to derail their chances of qualifying for the playoffs. Skipper Kane Williamson’s struggles with the bat have been the major reason behind SRH’s downfall.

The right-handed opener has scored just 208 runs this season with his average and strike rate being below 20 and 100 respectively. These numbers are far from impressive and the impact is evident. Meanwhile, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra reckons Williamson’s captaincy hasn’t been spot on either.

Kane Williamson has now goofed up twice: Aakash Chopra

Williamson, during the clash against KKR, asked off-spinner Washington Sundar to bowl the last over and Andre Russell took him to the cleaners. Notably, left-arm spinner Jagadeesha Suchith had bowled the last over when these two sides met earlier this season and Russell had done the damage then as well. Baffled with the bizarre tactic, Chopra questioned Williamson’s think tank and strategy.

“Kane the captain, I think, that’s the scrutiny as well. Twice now, against the same unit. Jagadeesha Suchith bowled the last over at the Brabourne Stadium and here it’s Washington Sundar. I mean, how?” an exasperated Aakash Chopra said on Star Sports after the match.

“And this is Kane Williamson, who is arguably one of the better cricketing brains on the planet, but has now goofed up twice, and that too against Andre Russell. That’s like sending a lamb to a slaughterhouse. What do you get? You get slaughtered, that’s it,” he added.

Meanwhile, SRH are now in a spot of bother as winning their remaining two games might not be enough for them to qualify in the playoffs. They will also have to depend upon other match results to earn a place in the next stage.
