'The bus driver drives a convertible now' - Mohammad Kaif reacts to Nasser Hussain's 18-year-old sledge

The NatWest Trophy 2002 final was a memorable match for every Indian fan. The way the Sourav Ganguly-led team won that match is still remembered. Recently, in an online podcast, England captain in that match Nasser Hussain, recalled how his side lost that match from a winning position.

The cricketer turned commentator talked about how his side was confident as India were struggling at 146 for 5 chasing a total of 326. England had got the wickets of Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Dinesh Mongia, and Rahul Dravid. After Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif stitched a partnership which took India to an unlikely and famous victory.

During the podcast, former England captain revealed that he tried to sledge young Kaif when he walked into bat at no. 7. Hussain recalled the story on how he sledged Kaif, “I think he must drive the bus, I think he drives Tendulkar around the bus”, Hussain said during the Sky Sports’ podcast named “One that got away”.

The ex-England captain also revealed that Kaif gave him a look after that match which kind of spoke to him “Not a bad one for a bus driver.”

After Sky Sports Cricket uploaded the audio from the conversation on its official Twitter handle, Kaif was quick to respond to that. He tagged Nasser Hussain and said that inning has now helped him to drive a convertible, “@nassercricket, thanks to that innings the bus driver drives a convertible now 🙂 @skycricket”, Kaif tweeted.

During the podcast, Hussain also credited that inning at the Lord’s by Kaif as his best knock.

At 146 for 5, India had lost all its hope. However, Kaif and Yuvraj got together for a 121-run partnership. Singh scored 69 runs from just 63 balls which helped Indians built a momentum. After the left-handed batsman got out, it was Kaif who took the charge upon himself to guide his team to a famous win.

He scored an unbeaten 87-run knock off just 75 balls, which made sure the visitors chased the huge total. After the win, Ganguly waved his shirt at the balcony of Lord’s.

Talking about the match, Hussain also said that it was the fact that two young players won India the match which stayed with the fans for so long. “To be outdone by two relatively unknown, young lads was a great boost to Indian cricket”, the former England captain said.
