The Indian team registered its first-ever series win in South Africa under the tutelage of skipper Virat Kohli. The Men in Blue has been in a sensational form across all formats. Following their 5-1 decimation of the Proteas in the six-match ODI series, the Indian colts have now emerged as the numero uno team in both Tests and ODI format.
While the team enjoyed a successful campaign on all fronts, the Indian cricketers remained dissatisfied with the food offered in South Africa. The issue cropped up during the ongoing tour when a local caterer was removed and Indian cuisine suppliers- Geet Restaurant from Pretoria was brought into service.
On the other hand, the local caterer said that they never had issues with other subcontinent teams including Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and it’s only Indian teams who prefer food cooked like at home. However, it’s important to remember that the present Indian squad is not like its the earlier eras. They are a much fitter unit than what they were 10 years ago.
It’s no secret that Indians are amongst the biggest foodies even the cricketers can’t resist themselves in this aspect. The players have always preferred Indian cuisine even in the dressing room on a match day. The 2014-15 tour of Australia showed to what extent the Indian players can go to fulfil their choice of food. Speedster Ishant Sharma and Suresh Raina were spotted going out of the stadium during the Gabba Test, to buy food.
Non-Indian restaurants not allowed on India’s tour
The cricketers were unhappy about the food which was served by the match organizers. The local caterer now serves food only to the South African players. At other venues too, it has been the case. The Men in Blue have always favoured Indian food. Moreover, the non-Indian restaurants haven’t been allowed to cater on India’s tour.
Geet Restaurant has supplied food for matches even in Johannesburg. Speaking about the developments, the manager of the restaurant said to Hindustan Times, “The players were unhappy with the local caterer here. So, we were hired and they enjoy and like it. We only cater to the dressing room and to the officials accompanying the Indian team.”
