Rohit Sharma led from the front as Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by five wickets on Tuesday to clinch their fifth IPL title. Playing their sixth IPL final, Mumbai Indians thoroughly dominated the contest and never allowed the first-time finalists to get ahead of them in the title-decider. The Rohit Sharma-led side went on to win the game with ease in the end.
Shreyas Iyer’s decision to bat first seemed to have backfired early on when Mumbai’s bowlers once again blew away Delhi’s top-order, leaving them reeling at 22 for 3 in the fourth over. But thanks to fighting fifties from Iyer and Rishabh Pant, Delhi Capitals recovered from the disastrous start and posted a competitive total of 156 for 7.
Iyer remained unbeaten on 65 while Pant scored 56. But the 156-run total did not turn out to be enough for Delhi as Mumbai Indians chased it down with eight balls remaining. Rohit starred with the bat for the champions, scoring 68 off 51 balls with the help of five fours and four sixes.
‘Should have sacrificed my wicket’: Rohit Sharma
Almost everything fell in place for Rohit Sharma during the IPL 2020 final as he batted his side to a record fifth title. But Rohit could have made things tougher for his side when his insistence for a quick single cost in-form Suryakumar Yadav his wicket. In the 11th over of the chase, Rohit set off for a single straightaway after punching Ashwin’s delivery towards extra-cover.
Suryakumar was adamant that there was no run but Rohit decided otherwise. And even before Suryakumar could leave his crease, the Mumbai skipper had already crossed the halfway mark on the pitch. In the end, the right-handed batsman decided to sacrifice his wicket by leaving his crease. Rohit had looked disappointed after the dismissal and spoke about it at the end of the game.
The India star said that he should have sacrificed his wicket considering the form Suryakumar was in. Suryakumar was indeed in stunning form in IPL 2020 and finished the season with an impressive 480 runs. Rohit, nonetheless, made amends for the run-out and went on to score a match-winning fifty for his side.
“The kind of form he was in, I should have sacrificed my wicket for Surya. But throughout the tournament he has played some incredible shots,” said Rohit Sharma at the post-match presentation ceremony.
