Before a few months, Dinesh Karthik wasn’t even in contention for a berth in the Indian team. However, lady luck smiled on him and he was drafted into the Indian team. He played against South Africa and was given an opportunity in the triangular series featuring India and Sri Lanka as well. With Mahendra Singh Dhoni not in the mix for the series, the onus was on Dinesh Karthik to fill in the massive boots of Dhoni.
Rishabh Pant, after a couple of lacklustre performance, was left out. Karthik started as a fielder-cum-batsman, however, after Pant’s eviction, he donned the wicket-keeper’s gloves. He batted decently, however, didn’t play exceedingly well. However, he had something exhilarating in store for the final showdown at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo against the might of Bangladesh.
Karthik drags India out of the slump
Shakib Al Hasan’s men had well and truly got India on the mat with some exemplary display of bowling, especially by Mustafizur Rahman. India required a mammoth 35 runs in the last couple of overs. The game was steadfastly drifting away from India. However, Dinesh Karthik stomped in and went hell for leather from the outset.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh struggled for answers to the questions posed by Karthik’s onslaught. Rubel Hossain conceded 13 runs in his first three overs which also included the scalps of KL Rahul and Suresh Raina. However, he profusely bled runs courtesy some gigantic blows by the recently appointed skipper of the Kolkata Knight Riders.
The pacer conceded 22 runs, which brought India back into contention from a state of hopelessness and most importantly, injected life into the game. Bangladesh had an opportunity to make amends for the horrendous over as India required 12 runs from the last over. Part-timer Soumya Sarkar was entrusted to bowl the final over and he held his nerves pretty expertly.
The gigantic blow
His innocuous medium pace restricted the Indians in the first five deliveries. Subsequently, they required five runs from the final delivery. However, the pressure turned out to be too hot to handle for the part-time and he was smashed for the flattest of sixes over the extra cover region. On the contrary, Karthik showed nerves of steel and pulled off the outrageous stroke.
Quite expectantly. Indians were ecstatic and Bangladesh found themselves in a state of utter shock. Bangladesh had to engulf the reality that they allowed India to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Dinesh Karthik was disdainful, to say the least, and Bangladesh was vandalized by the wrath of the Tamil Nadu-cricketer. Let’s relive the awe-inspiring stroke by Dinesh Karthik.
