'The other three players are world class and I admire the way they go about their cricket' - Kane Williamson on the FAB 4

Kane Williamson is having the time of his life as he is ranked as number 1 batsman in Test batsmen rankings by the International Cricket Council (ICC). In addition, under his leadership, the Black Caps effectively defeated West Indies and Pakistan by 2-0 in the purest format of the game to leapfrog Australia and become the world No 1 Test team for the first time in history.

Williamson along with Indian skipper Virat Kohli, England’s Joe Root and Australia’s Steve Smith are referred as FAB 4 of cricket world. Opining on his contemporaries, Kane said all the three batsmen are world class and he admires the way they go about their game. The Kiwi skipper also added that there are always a lot of things one can learn from such class players.

“The other three players that you mentioned, world class and I certainly admire the way they go about their cricket. You can always learn a lot from those sorts of players, especially they are all different, that’s the kind of beauty of the game, you got so many fantastic players that are trying to move the game forward,” Williamson told India Today’s Consulting Editor (Sports) Boria Majumdar.

During the course of the interaction, Kane also opined on him outplaying the other three members of Fab 4 to take the top spot in Test rankings saying that he doesn’t believe much in personal milestones as the rankings can be fickle and can quickly change in the favour of others.

“In terms of those rankings they are not my focus, I know how fickle that can be, much like perhaps Test rankings of the team and opportunity to play the finals (ICC Test Championship), we sit here now, perhaps we have the ranking but they can change so quickly from other teams, the cricket they play. Try to contribute to the team you are playing for and I think that’s the main thing.

“It has been a really enjoyable Test summer for our side, you always want more Test cricket, they came thick and fast a few months ago but now it’s turning the white-ball mode and we have got some T20Is coming up, some one-dayers as well to the IPL,” Williamson concluded.
