It was an absolute treat to watch Dale Steyn bowling in the 2nd ODI against Zimbabwe, in his comeback game. It never appeared as if he was playing white-ball cricket after two years. For head coach Ottis Gibson, his return along with the one of Imran Tahir was the biggest highlight of the ODI series.
In that match, Steyn bagged the ‘Man of the Match’ award as well. With the bat, he scored 60 runs when South Africa was under pressure, which is also his highest ODI score. Then, he came back with the ball and picked two wickets in the six overs that he bowled. Tahir picked 6 wickets in the same game as the Proteas won by 120 runs. Steyn followed up his performance with another three wickets in the 3rd ODI.
It was fantastic to see Dale Steyn bowling with that skill and accuracy
Head coach Ottis Gibson heaped a lot of praises on the ‘Steyn Gun’. He said that it was exciting watching him bowl in the 2nd ODI. He further added that it was fantastic to see him bowl with great skill and accuracy. Gibson was also impressed with Steyn’s pace.
“I know what Rabada and Ngidi can do but for me, the real excitement was watching Dale Steyn bowling in the second game in Bloemfontein. It was fantastic to see him back to that level again, bowling quickly with that skill and accuracy. That is the real exciting part for me,” the Proteas coach said.
Also, speaking about Imran Tahir, Gibson noted that he is their number one. He justified resting Tahir earlier by saying that they wanted to see what the other players are capable of.
“We have given Tahir time off to allow us to see other players and he has come back and shown us why he is our number one. He has come back and bowled really well, he is mentoring Shamsi which is good for Shamsi, we have high hopes for him,” Gibson added.
