India and Australia are playing the fourth and last game of the Test series, which the visitors are dominating. On the first day of the match, confusion arose between skipper Tim Paine and his quicks, about Australia’s bowling tactics against India. Bowling coach David Saker revealed that the team had a discussion about what went wrong in their bowling, at the end of the day’s play.

India reached 303 for 4 at stumps as Australia’s pace attack of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood endured a difficult time. Saker revealed that the bowlers and Paine did not share the same wavelength about the tactics to be deployed on the green Sydney pitch.

“I think the bowlers wanted one thing, Tim wanted one thing,” Saker said while speaking to ABC Grandstand. “That’s not been the case as the general rule but when you were watching from the sideline you could see there was some confusion. Last night we talked quite heavily about the day, more because we thought it was a really disappointing day and we just wanted to get our point across.”

“Some of it was quite aggressive and that’s not like me usually. I was quite animated, and I know I was not the only one. JL (Langer) wasn’t happy. The bowlers know that.”

Nathan Lyon’s viewpoint

Saker said the Australians bowlers were inconsistent and that Nathan Lyon, in particular, was unhappy with the tactics. Lyon himself expressed disappointment, saying that the Australian bowlers didn’t make the most of the moisture in the wicket.

“I wasn’t too happy with that, to be honest,” Lyon said after Day one. “We missed out on using the moisture in the wicket. I thought we could have stuck there (full) longer, but the captain and the bowlers came up with a decent plan and unfortunately it didn’t work.”
