Days after his unceremonious sacking as the captain of Pakistan team, Sarfaraz Ahmed has insisted he is not bitter at the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision. PCB sensationally sacked him after the shocking 3-0 loss at home in T20Is to a second-string Sri Lankan side. Sarfaraz’s performance with the bat did not help his cause either.

The sacking was on the cards for quite some time. In fact, speculations were rife that PCB would appoint new captains right after the end of the disastrous World Cup campaign for the Men in Green. However, the board gave Sarfaraz another chance before finally deciding to wield the axe on him. He was sacked as the Test and T20I captain and was replaced by Azhar Ali and Babar Azam respectively.

The wicketkeeper-batsman has now said he does not have any regret with the way he was removed as captain. He also said he is grateful as well as satisfied with his performance as captain. The finest moment of Sarfaraz’s captaincy came in 2017 when he led the country to the historic Champions Trophy triumph.

“I am grateful for whatever I achieved as the captain. I am satisfied with my performance as captain. I captained Pakistan in 100 international games in three formats. I always tried to perform for Pakistan and gave my best,” Sarfaraz Ahmed was quoted as saying by News International.

“There’s nothing to regret about. It doesn’t matter if I am disappointed or not as it was the PCB’s decision. My job is to play cricket and do my better and make a comeback. I can’t tell you when exactly but the more I perform, the more early I can make a comeback,” he added.

PCB CEO informed him about the sacking

The former Pakistan captain went on to reveal that before the announcement of his sacking, the PCB CEO Wasim Khan had visited him to convey the decision. He said the board had given him the offer of either resigning by himself or the board would itself release a statement. In reply, the wicketkeeper-batsman asked the board to go ahead with its decision.

“I was asked if I would prefer to resign myself or through a press release. I said that it is your (PCB’s) decision and whatever is in the better interest of Pakistan cricket, I would be satisfied with it,” Sarfaraz Ahmed said.

The right-handed batsman, meanwhile, has also lost his place in the Pakistan team. He has been asked to prove himself in the domestic circuit in order to earn recall from the national side. He recently played in the domestic T20 games but did not have much success. As of now, Sarfaraz is plying his trade for Sindh in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.
