The nation was rocked by a heinous gangrape and brutal killing of a 26-year-old vet Disha near the National Highway 44 which joins Hyderabad to Bengaluru on November 28, when a charred body was found by police under a bypass in Shadnagar. Given the frequency of news about rapes being increased in the newspaper, people found themselves at a boiling point.
They raged for the police to nab the accused as soon as possible, which they managed to do. Mohammed Arif, Naveen, Shiva, and Chennakeshavulu were arrested on November 29 and all four were aged between 20 and 24 and were lorry drivers. The accused were then sent to judicial custody of 14 days. On December 6, they were taken to the crime scene for a reenactment of the crime.

The four men had tricked the 26-year-old veterinarian by puncturing the tire of her two-wheeler and then took her to the secluded spot where she was brutally abused sexually and beaten for a long time. She was then burned to remove evidence of the crime, all while her family was tensed about her whereabouts, given that she had called her sister just before being abducted.
On the morning of December 6, police took the accused to the site of the crime to recreate the scene and shot them dead around 100 meters from the spot where the victim’s charred body was found. The officials of Cyberabad police Commissionerate reasoned that the accused tried to snatch the weapons from the police, firing on the cops and were shot dead in the ensuing chase.
This deed of Cyberabad police was praised by many celebrities including Saina Nehwal, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and veteran Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh. The Punjab spinner praised the police for their swift action and tweeted, “Well done @TelanganaCMO and police for showing this is how it is done. no one should dare doing something like this again in future #makeitsafeindia.”
There were mixed reactions on Twitter which went from ‘hang the rapists’ to ‘unconstitutional’ quickly as more details about the encounter filtered in. However, Disha’s family, the vet who was killed gave a statement. “It has been 10 days to the day my daughter died. I express my gratitude towards the police and government for this. My daughter’s soul must be at peace now,” the victim’s father was quoted as saying by Times Now.
