The former Australian captain is the first and the most obvious pick to finish as the leading run-getter in the series. Steve Smith needed only two innings on his return to snatch the number one Test ranking back from Virat Kohli. It was in the Ashes series in England that Smith marked his return to Test cricket in more than a year and almost single-handedly laid the foundation for Australia to retain the urn.

The 30-year old received the player of the series award for scoring 774 runs at an average of 110.25 with no other batsmen coming close in matching his peerless display throughout the series. Smith’s unorthodox technique, combined with his insatiable appetite for runs makes him the most bothersome prospect for the Pakistan bowlers.

Similar to the series in 2016-17, where he ended the three-match series as the top-run getter, Smith is most likely set to lead the run-scoring chart again. Along with Warner, this will be Smith’s first Test on the Australian soil in more than a year. The New South Wales lad has also been grinding out in the Sheffield Shield to prepare himself to play some marathon knocks this summer.
