Captain Kaushik Gandhi’s sparkling century set up Jones Tuti Patriots’ 48-run win over VB Kanchi Veerans in the 2018 Sankar Cement-TNPL at the ICL Sankar Nagar Ground in Tirunelveli on Sunday, July 15. Bringing up his hundred in just 66 balls, Gandhi became only the fifth centurion in the tournament’s history and first in the third edition. The unbeaten 111(68b) by the opener included 13 boundaries and 3 sixes.

Opting to bat first, Patriots’ opening pair of Gandhi and S Dinesh showed alertness for sharp singles and attacked when possible as the Powerplay yielded 63 runs. After Dinesh’s dismissal, Anand Subramanian supported Gandhi and compiled a quiet 37 (27b, 2×4, 1×6).

With the captain in smashing form, Patriots collected 58 runs from their last four overs. The wrath was severely felt by medium pacer R. Silambarasan, who conceded the most expensive bowling figures (4-0-61-1) in the tournament’s history. Patriots posted the tournament’s highest total so far, 191/3.

Chasing 192 for victory was always going to be an uphill task. Veerans began promisingly despite losing an early wicket as they scored 52 runs in Powerplay. The spin trio of Ganesh Moorthy, R Sai Kishore and Malolan Rangarajan then choked the Veerans batsmen.

With the required run rate rising, Veerans batsmen were unable to play the much-needed big shots. Batting at No 5, Subramania Siva hit a brisk 33 (18b, 4×4, 2×6) but the side capitulated after his dismissal.

Brief Scores:

Jones Tuti Patriots 191/4 in 20 overs (Kaushik Gandhi 111*, Anand Subramanian 37, Sanjay Yadav 1-28 ) bt VB Kanchi Veerans 143/9 in 20 overs (Subramania Siva 33, Vishal Vaidhya 33, Malolan Rangarajan 2-31, Athisayaraj Davidson 2-32) by 48 runs.
