The game of cricket has millions of fans all over the world. However, we cannot still call cricket as a global sport. Cricket is played by very few nations as compared to other sports like Football. The already smaller pool of nations playing cricket is dominated by few nations like India, Australia and England. Dominating the game is not good for its growth as the nations will work as they please and introduce changes that help their country and not for the greater good.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is one of the richest private sports bodies in the world. The ICC Strategy Working Group (SWG) has been inclined towards promoting the game to various parts of the world. There have been talks of introducing cricket in Olympics but the proposal hasn’t materialized so far.

As per TOI, the SWOT analysis of the report suggests that cricket hasn’t become global sport because the major chunk of revenue comes from BCCI and there is over-dependence on one nation. While the move attempts to counter the reliance on India have been made, the report also highlighted the attempts as not ‘aggressive enough’.

A big task at hand

The report will be up for discussion during a meeting between some of the ICC officials and the Indian board in New Delhi on Thursday. It is widely expected that a resolution for overcoming this limitation will be proposed. It is also believed that ICC is looking to further curb BCCI’s share from the total pool of revenue.

“There is an attempt to cut BCCI to size. How can a body which generates maximum revenue be asked to let go of what it deserves? The report hasn’t been backed up by numbers,” a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by TOI.

Reliance on a small pool of players is not good for the game of cricket. More and more nations must have a say in the decision making which will result in the promotion of the game. The associate nations have been doing very well of late and providing them with more opportunities is the need of the hour. A move like the 10-team World Cup is certainly detrimental as more teams must participate in the flagship tournament for the game to become more and more popular.
