England’s batting became a force to deal in the limited-overs formats by the time Sri Lanka toured them in 2016. The Lankans managed to hold the home team in the first match to a Tie thanks to a maximum from Liam Plunkett on the last ball of the game. In the second game of the 5-match ODI series, the two sides faced off in Birmingham. Sri Lanka finished on 254/7 after struggling through their innings.
Both the openers Alex Hales and <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/twitter-reactions-jason-roy-and-chris-morris-team-up-to-help-the-giants-continue-their-unbeaten-streak/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Jason Roy </a>took little time at the start of the chase to get going as they needed 55 balls apiece to reach fifty. Roy took 37 more balls for bringing up his hundred while Hales completed his hundred in 91 deliveries. England, who were 111/0 in 20 overs, smashed 108 runs in the next 10 overs. They finished the chase of 255 in only 34.1 overs and took a 1-0 lead in the series.
This became the highest 10-wicket chase in ODI cricket bettering New Zealand’s 236-run chase against Zimbabwe. If we ignore the match situation, this chase by England can be considered as a proper revenge over the Sri Lankans for what they did in the 2011 World Cup quarter-final. In fact, England did it in a better way as they chased down at 7.49 runs an over with 89 balls to spare.

<h3>2. Australia vs India, 2020 – Target 256</h3>

Australia’s successful chase of 256 in Mumbai is now the 2nd highest ever successful chase in ODI cricket during a 10-wicket victory. This was only the 2nd time India lost an ODI match by 10 wickets on home soil. The 2005 Kolkata ODI against South Africa was the first such instance. This is also the first time Australia won by 10 wickets in an ODI since beating Bangladesh by the same margin in the 2007 World Cup.
This was the 2nd time India lost an ODI match by 10 wickets while defending a 200+ target. The other such instance was during the 1997 Bridgetown ODI where West Indies chased down 200 in 44.4 overs. <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/shivnarine-chanderpaul-does-the-unbelievable-smashes-210-runs-in-a-t20-team-scores-303/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Shivnarine Chanderpaul</a> and Stuart Williams scored 109 and 78 respectively. In fact, Australia never won an ODI match by 10-wicket margin while chasing even a 150+ target before this game.
The 256-run chase by Australia is also the highest ODI chase during a 10-wicket win against the home side. The previous highest was 236 by New Zealand against the Zimbabwe team. In fact, Australia’s chase of 256 was also the 5th highest successful chase by a 10-wicket margin in List A cricket and also the first-ever 250+ chase without losing a wicket against the home team in this format.

<h3>1. South Africa vs Bangladesh, 2017 – Target 279</h3>

South Africa started their 2017/18 home series with a grand win against the touring Bangladesh team. In the first of the 3-match ODI series, Bangladesh posted 278/7 in their 50 overs as Mushfiqur Rahim scored an unbeaten 110 off 116 balls. South Africa, in reply, kept scoring runs at run-a-ball pace from the start and didn’t let Bangladesh have any chance in defending the total.
Quinton de Kock smashed a 145-ball 168 while <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/fawad-amla-or-fawad-alam-rashid-latif-compares-the-pakistan-batsman-to-hashim-amla/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Hashim Amla</a> scored 110 off 112 balls as South Africa chased down the target in 42.5 overs. They thus set record for the highest successful chase without losing a wicket in ODI cricket breaking the record held by England with their 255-run chase in 2016. South Africa’s 279-run chase is also the then highest during a 10-wicket win in List A cricket.
They thus broke the record set by Delhi against Punjab with a 275-run chase thanks to hundreds from Shikhar Dhawan (139*) and Aakash Chopra (130*). However, South Africa’s List A record was eclipsed in the 2018 Pakistan One-Day Cup. The opening pair of Khurram Manzoor (190*) and Shan Masood (100*) helped Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to chase down 298 in only 38.1 overs against Punjab (Pakistan).
