Tshwane Spartans’ Shaun von Berg exchanges ‘smelly’ cap with keeper Gihahn Cloete

Four days ago, Tshwane Spartans locked horns with Nelson Mandela Bay Giants in a must-win clash at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth. The Spartans, captained by the evergreen AB de Villiers, held their nerve and managed to win by 28 runs to keep alive their hopes of progressing to the next round of MSL 2018. In the meantime, a funny incident panned out in the second innings.

After the Spartans set a target of 166, the Giants were reeling at one stage as they needed 37 more runs in two overs with number 10 and Jack in the middle. Lizaad Williams and South African veteran Imran Tahir had a humungous task ahead of them that they couldn’t achieve. Leg-spinner Shaun von Berg bowled the 18th over and it was also the final over of his four-over spell.

After the tweaker completed the over, the on-field umpire handed him a couple of caps. However, von Berg was a tad confused about which was his one. Subsequently, he, hilariously, smelled both the caps for quite some time after which he through about it and wore the one of his choice. Thereafter, the leg-spinner handed over the more smelly one to wicketkeeper Gihahn Cloete.

A decent day for von Berg

Von Berg was fairly impressive with the leather in hand. The 32-year-old bowler was difficult to get away as he gave away only 19 runs apart from picking up three wickets, which included the likes of Heino Kuhn, Chris Morris, and Sisanda Magala, all of whom can tonk the ball a fair distance.

In fact, Magala’s wicket came at the right time when the right-handed batsman was taking the match away from the Spartans with a knock of 31 runs from 21 balls, laced with a couple of boundaries and as many sixes. Meanwhile, the Spartans lost their previous match against Jozi Stars and were eliminated.
