Virat Kohli is currently in England where he is captaining the India team in the five-match Test series against England. The right-handed batsman is currently the leading run-scorer in the series and has effortlessly been India’s standout batsman. Previously, the 29-year-old also captained the team in the limited-overs series against the Three Lions and Ireland respectively.

However, he has had to encounter a lower-back injury owing to which he couldn’t take part in the county championship for Surrey in England’s first-class cricket. He sustained the same in the Indian Premier League, representing the Royal Challengers Bangalore. To India’s relief, he recovered in time for the United Kingdom (UK) tour and has played every match.

Kohli given a much-needed rest

In the meantime, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a 16-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Kohli has been left out of the squad and Rohit Sharma has been made the skipper. His workload has been immense as he is the all-format captain of the national team and has played cricket continuously this year.

Prior to the event, the selectors, headed by former Indian cricketer and chief selector MSK Prasad, had the conundrum of managing Kohli’s workload and they eventually decided to give him a break. The tournament starts on September 15 and will continue till September 28. The six-team qualifiers are currently taking place in Malaysia after which the main event will get underway.

Five teams- India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan- have already made a direct entry. The other qualifier will join India and Pakistan in Group A. Six teams are scheduled to play 13 matches in the extravaganza. Meanwhile, Twitter can’t believe the fact the Kohli hasn’t found a place in the team.
