Back in August, Thane-born Prithvi Shaw got his maiden call-up when India played the five-match Test series against England. Unfortunately, he had to warm the benches in the matches at The Ageas Bowl and Kennington Oval respectively. KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan were preferred ahead of him. Nevertheless, he was picked for the two-match series against the Windies.

One day prior to the first Test at Saurashtra Cricket Association in Rajkot, the Indian team management announced a 12-man squad. Albeit the 11 men were yet to be announced, Shaw’s position in the team was more or less assured. On the first day’s morning, Rahul and Shaw came out to bat. Moreover, he became the second youngest Indian debutant after Vijay Mehra way back in 1955.

Shaw torments the Windies bowlers

Surprisingly, Shaw took the strike and he left the first ball from right-arm seamer Shannon Gabriel. The speedster nipped out Rahul early, but that didn’t perturb Shaw by any stretch of the imagination. He didn’t go into his shell and rather, took on the Windies pacers. Moreover, he didn’t take any half-measures. Shaw went to score his maiden half-century in a mere 56 deliveries.

The 18-year-old buckled down a wee bit, but didn’t lose his focus. Eventually, he brought up his first century in Test cricket off 99 balls with the help of 15 boundaries. In the first ball of the 33rd over, Shaw defended Keemo Paul. In the very next delivery, the youngster drove Keemo Paul through the covers for a couple of runs to accomplish the feat.

Moreover, he became the youngest Indian debutant to notch a ton. The more intriguing part of the ton was that it came at more than a run-a-ball. Moreover, he also became the seventh youngest to score a Test century. In the meantime, Twitter was all praise for the pugnacious potential following his stupendous knock.
