Twitter is filled with respect for Gautam Gambhir after his decision to play for free

Delhi Daredevils (DD) have had an abysmal run in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). They managed to humble the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede courtesy of Jason Roy’s blitz. However, apart from that, they have been thrashed black and blue by the opponents. Currently, they are languishing at the bottom of the table with one win from six games.

In the light of the horrendous run, Gautam Gambhir stepped down from the role of captaincy. He mentioned that the move wasn’t influenced by the team management and it was completely his call to give up the role. The Delhi-cricketer highlighted the prominence of the game being greater than an individual and wished for the betterment of the Daredevils in the long run.

Subsequently, Shreyas Iyer, who has been in prime form in the season, has been appointed as the skipper for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, it has also been learned that Gambhir won’t take any salary for the season and will now play for free. He was among the marquee players in the auction of the mega event in Bangalore back in January.

However, he couldn’t fetch more than INR 2.8 crores as the Daredevils picked him up. The left-handed batsman managed to notch a half-century against the Kings XI Punjab in the opening game, but has lost his rhythm thereafter and has only managed single-digit scores thereafter. Prior to his stint with the Daredevils, he played seven seasons for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

He captained them from the front and also helped them to a couple of championships. Soon after, appreciations surrounding his leadership style poured in. Nevertheless, following the move to play without any remuneration, Twitter showered him with respect and hailed him for the contributions he has made thus far in his career.
