Gautam Gambhir’s cricketing career has been illustrious one. He made his international debut back in 2003 against Bangladesh and has tasted a significant amount of success. He was a part of the victorious World Cup squads which won the 2007 World T20 in South Africa and the 2011 World Cup in the sub-continent. However, the last few years haven’t been fruitful for the left-handed batsman.
He last donned the national colours back in 2016 in a Test match against England. The 36-year-old hasn’t had the greatest of times in the domestic cricket as well. Prior to the 2016/17 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he stepped down as the skipper of Delhi and then didn’t play any match in the season thereafter. He also wasn’t given the captaincy in the Ranji trophy last year and Ishant Sharma was made the captain.
Gambhir in the political fraternity?
His career in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has gone into the doldrums as well. He was previously appointed the captain of the Delhi Daredevils (DD). Nevertheless, following the franchise’s loss in the first few matches, he decided to resign from his position. Moreover, he didn’t play the next matches. At the age of 36, the Delhi-born cricketer doesn’t seem to have much of a chance to resurrect his career.
Recently, it has been learned that he may be contesting the elections of Delhi on the tickets of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Currently, Aam Aadmi Party, headed by Arvind Kejriwal is the ruling party in the state. BJP would be desperate to emerge victorious as New Delhi is the capital of India. Previously, a number of cricketers have tried their hands in the field of politics.
Navjot Singh Sidhu, the former Indian batsman, is a minister in the Punjab government. The likes of Mohammad Kaif and Mohammad Azharuddin have also fought elections on the ticket of Congress. In the meantime, Twitter is happy with the news of Gambhir and they welcomed him gleefully with open arms.
