Quinton de Kock has been singled out in the past for several reasons, one of them being his attitude. However, the positives that he has also been singled out for have been him immaculate wicketkeeping. So, when Shaun Marsh decided that he needed to step out against Keshav Maharaj, nobody in the world would have been happier than de Kock. In fact, such was his happiness that he missed the stumping altogether, much to the surprise of Michael Holding, Mike Haysman, and Shaun ‘Polly’ Pollock in the haven of the commentary box.
‘Oh,’ Michael Holding exclaimed in his thunderous Jamaican voice. ‘How could he have missed that maan?’ Little did he know that the lads in the recording van were unraveling the reasons and substantial evidence regarding the 25-year old South African keeper’s chance that went a begging. When Mike Haysman analyzed the footage, it showed that the ball had gone under his gloves, contrary to Shane Warne’s theory of the ball hitting him in the arm.
Markram to the rescue!
Warnie was clearly on the losing side of his theoretical conclusions, but there was centurion Aiden Markram who came to the aid of de Kock. However, despite the arrival of the batting hero and Australia’s kryptonite, he could not really do much for his counterpart. Images and further evidence captured by the intelligence truck parked just outside the bullring caught an image and decided to play a little game with de Kock called ‘Stingray!’
At the end of it all, Quinton de Kock would not have been the saddest man in Johannesburg on the day, especially after conspiring against Usman Khawaja with Vernon Philander – perhaps this day just turned out fine. As for the senior Marsh bros. it is a case of living to fight another day, or in this case – living to fight another bee.
