West Indies put forth a highly commendable performance to lift their maiden Under-19 title, defeated the strong Indian side by 5 wickets in a low scoring game at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur.
It was after 33 years that teams from both the nations came head in a tournament final. The Indian team was tipped to be the favorites but the West Indies team could not be written off as they had also given some spectacular performances to reach here.
West Indies skipper Shimron Hetmyer won the toss and asked the Ishan Kishan led-side to bat first. Alzarri Joseph, probably the fastest bowler in the tournament, gave the perfect start to his team with three early wickets. The in-form openers Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan along with Anmolpreet Singh were very disappointing and left India in trouble at 27/3. The struggling Washington Sundar also failed to stay at the crease.
Shamar Springer brought out the chest roll after he dismissed Armaan Jaffer to push the Indian completely on the backfoot. Sarfraz Khan played a fighting 89 ball 51 runs knock to save the face for India. The Indians were soon all out and could eventually manage only a paltry 145 on the scoreboard.
Defending the tiny target, the Indians also gave a tough fight and had reduced the chasing team for 77/5. Mayank Dagar had become a threat for the West Indians. However, the level-headed duo of Kacey Carty (52 from 123 balls) and Keemo Paul (40 from 68 balls) took the game completely away from the Indian grasp and lead their team to the World Cup title.
