After The Gabba and Lord’s, fortress Centurion has been breached by India this year! There was rain forecast for Day 5, but the rain gods stayed away, as India produced a superb performance with the red cherry on Day 5 to draw first blood in the three-match Test series. South Africa started the day confidently, with Dean Elgar and Temba Bavuma scoring runs at a good pace.

Elgar and Bavuma added 36 runs in 10 overs. But just when things were getting easy for South Africa, Jasprit Bumrah trapped Elgar plumb in front of the stumps. The Protean skipper walked back after scoring a defiant 156-ball 77.

Quinton De Kock scored a breezy 21 off 28 deliveries and perished when he tried to play one shot too many. To a short-pitched delivery, De Kock went for the cut, the ball took the inside edge of his willow and shattered the stumps.

Wiann Mulder departed in the very next over and was dismissed by an absolute JAFFA from Mohammed Shami. Shami bowled the ball at a good length with the red cherry shaping away, Mulder tried to defend it, the ball took the outside edge of his blade, and Rishabh Pant completed the formalities with the gloves.

Temba Bavuma’s gritty innings goes in vain

Marco Jansen was the next man to depart. The tall South African edged Mohammed Shami to Rishabh Pant, who completed a good low catch behind the stumps. Then, Kagiso Rabada came and went. Ravichandran Ashwin bowled a flighted delivery, and the left-hander hit the ball straight to point and departed for a duck.

And finally, there was jubilation for the Indian side when Ashwin scalped the final South African wicket. Lungi Ngidi was dismissed off the very first ball that he faced, as India went 1-0 up in the series.

Amidst all this, Temba Bavuma held fort. The right-hander was severe on any loose delivery bowled by the Indians and at the same time was solid in defense. Bavuma was unbeaten on 35, having faced 80 deliveries. But, his vigil went in vain, as the Proteas went down by 113 runs. So, Virat Kohli and Co. go 1-0 up and are on course to conquer their final frontier.
