Runners up of the last season, Saint Lucia Kings have made a terrible start to their campaign in Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2021, suffering a 120 run loss in their first match. Jamaica Tallawahs had the command throughout the contest and they would be thrilled with their performance. While Andre Russell was the start in the batting department, Migael Pretorius shone with the ball in hand.

Earlier in the game, Jamaica Tallawahs skipper Rovman Powell won the toss at the Warner Park in Basseterre and opted to bat first. The track was brilliant for batting and the Tallawahs made optimum utilization. Openers Chadwick Walton (47) and Kennar 48 () went after the bowlers straightaway as the Jamaica-based side posted 81 runs in the powerplay overs. The baton was then passed onto skipper Powell and Haider Ali, and the duo didn’t disappoint, scoring 45 and 38 respectively.

Andre Russell unleashes mayhem in Basseterre

With the scorecard reading 199/3, the Tallawahs were already on the command. However, Russell came to bat at number five and dented the Kings even further. The dasher unleashed mayhem and scored a half-century off mere 14 balls, fastest for any batter in CPL history. Riding on his prowess, JT posted 255/5 in their allotted 20 overs.

Chasing the mammoth total, the Kings never really looked in the contest with wickets falling for them in a cluster. Migael Pretorius delivered a sensational spell and broke the backbone of Kings’ batting line-up. From Rahkeem Cornwall to Faf du Plessis, no one from the top order could play an innings of substance as the Saint Lucia-based side was reduced to 66/6.

While their victory looked a mere formality, Tim David added some spice in the contest. Batting at number nine, the Singapore-born cricketer showcased great character and tried to bring his side back in the hunt. He played some brilliant shots all over the park and slammed a quick-fire half-century. In total, he slammed 56 off mere 28 balls before falling prey to Pretorius.

Although David’s effort was commendable, it could only reduce the margin of defeat. The Kings were bundled out for 135, losing the contest by 120 runs. Unsurprisingly, Russell was named the Player-of-the-Match for his sensational knock.
