An Andre Russell mayhem hit the Wankhede Stadium as Kolkata Knight Riders thrashed Punjab Kings by six wickets to record their second win in IPL 2022. The West Indies dasher was at his destructive best as KKR chased down 138 inside 15 overs. Besides him, Umesh Yadav shone in the game and scalped a four-wicket haul.

Earlier in the game, KKR won the toss and opted to bowl at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Umesh Yadav continued to wreak havoc with the new ball as PBKS lost their skipper Mayank Agarwal in the very first over. However, Bhanuka Rajapaksa arrived at number three and there were fireworks all over the park. The southpaw lasted just nine balls but managed to score 31 runs with three fours and as many sixes.

Besides Rajapaksa, many other Punjab batters like Shikhar Dhawan, Liam Livingstone, and Raj Bawa also got starts. However, none of them were able to play a substantial knock with KKR bowlers striking at regular intervals. Umesh was certainly razor-sharp with the ball in hand as he recorded his best figures in IPL, 4/23. Besides him, Tim Southee also scalped a couple of wickets.

It was a rollercoaster of a clash at Wankhede

Meanwhile, a handy 25-run cameo from Kagiso Rabada meant Punjab posted 137 before losing their last wicket in the penultimate over of the innings. In reply, KKR didn’t have the best of starts with Ajinkya Rahane getting dismissed in the very second over. His opening partner Venkatesh Iyer couldn’t do much either and was dismissed for three.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer then joined forces with Sam Billings and the duo took KKR past the 50-run mark. However, their dismissal in quick succession meant KKR found themselves in a spot of bother at 51/4. Nonetheless, then began the Andre Russell show and the ball was flying all over the venue.

He smashed the ball for fun and pushed PBKS out of the contest. With eight sixes, Russell scored an unbeaten 70 off 31 deliveries as the Knight Riders crossed the line in just 14.3 overs, clinching the contest by six wickets.

Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitter reacted to the encounter:
