After a long wait and a lengthy process former Indian captain, Anil Kumble was appointed the coach of the Indian team ahead of the West Indies tour in 2016. And as the Indian team landed in the Caribbean for the next tour almost after 12 months Kumble first didn’t travel with the team and now reports suggest that the has stepped down from the position.
Parallel speculations also prompt that former Indian opener Virender Sehwag who was considered a front-runner for the position is now set to take over the vacant slot. Meanwhile a lot of analysts, reporters and experts along with the fans are agitated with the way the entire matter has been handled by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and how the skipper Virat Kohli has been given a free hand to an extent where he can lead to the sacking of the coach.
Kumble’s record:
If we are to consider performance as a base, Kumble was at the helm of the team for 17 Tests of which the team won 12, lost just 1 and 4 matches ended as draws. Though they played most of the Tests at home their win percentage of 70.59 definitely reflects the team’s performance. From the 13 ODIs, the team won 8 matches and lost 5 while in the T20Is the record was 2 wins and 2 losses with one game ending without a result.
While a lot of people blamed Kohli for the coach’s ouster there were others who reasoned his demand for a higher pay along with a 150% hike in the retainer fees of the players to be the prominent reason why the BCCI wasn’t keen on renewing his contract.
The BCCI in its official statement said that while the board was willing to give him an extension Kumble decided to end his term.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the news:
If it is true that @anilkumble1074 has stepped down as coach, Indian cricket has let itself lose an outstanding resource.

Organisations must strive to preserve committed people. I will be disappointed if there isn't a bigger role for @anilkumble1074

@anilkumble1074 stepping down shows even CAC (Sachin, Ganguly, Laxman) failed to broker peace between him and Virat Kohli…

Sad, but also deeply intriguing how `a marriage made in heaven' between @anilkumble1074 & @imVkohli should crumble so soon

Dignified to go @anilkumble1074 Our well-run cricket is now a man-made disaster. Like a patient a surgeon cut open, but can't stitch back https://t.co/eFXXMW7vzH
