This was one game Pakistan they deserved to win for the sake of their fast bowlers who put in a spirited performance to press Australia on their knees quite early in the game. But like always their fielders allowed them to make a comeback in the game and once the Aussies posted 268 it was never going to be easy for the Pakistani batsmen to chase it down on a Gabba surface that was behaving in favor of the bowlers.

Steve Smith won the toss and chose to bat first; they added debutant Billy Stanlake in the team for this game who also became the tallest Australian international cricketer standing at 204 cms. But his turn in the game would come late. Mohammad Amir bowled a ferocious spell of fast bowling and beat the outside edge of the ball more often than it was hit. He found success in the 5th over with the big wicket of David Warner.

The Australian opener who has been in splendid form tried to flick one that swung away from him, the ball beat the bat and clicked into the bails to send him back to the pavilion. On the very next ball the Aussies were dealt another blow as skipper Smith was dismissed for a golden duck. It was a peach of a delivery from Amir and Smith edged it the keeper. The next man Chri Lynn scored 16 gave Mohammad Rizwan his first wicket of the afternoon.

It was now the turn of left-arm spinner Imad Wasim to pick a wicket and he got two sending back Travis Head (39) and Mitchell Marsh (4) both were caught behind the wicket by wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan. 5 down for 78 Australia were in deep trouble and all Pakistan needed to do was keep the pressure up. In walked Glenn Maxwell to partner with wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade. The duo added 82 runs for the 6th wicket and gave substance to the innings.

Maxwell got out for 60 but Wade continued and eventually got his maiden hundred on the last ball of the innings. Backed by his ton Australia posted 268/9 in their quota. Hasan Ali got three wickets, Amir and Wasim shared two each and Mohammad Nawaz had a solitary success.

Pakistan in their reply were ordinary. Out chasing a modest total on a good wicket their batsmen didn’t show enough application to hang in and wait for scoring opportunities. Though the Aussies bowled well most wickets fell to irresponsible shots from the Pakistan batsmen who tried to hit all the balls out of the park but found the fielders instead.

James Faulkner was the pick of the bowlers with 4/32 in his 7 overs spell during which he also bowled a maiden. Pat Cummins picked 3 while Mitchell Starc got two and Mitchell Marsh settled for one.
