Chris Woakes rescued England from what could’ve been an embarrassing total but it was too small to restrict Australia.

After having sealed the series 3-nil, England failed to continue the winning spree at the Adelaide Oval. In what was a rare top-order failure, the visitors were reduced to 8/5 hardly an hour after they were put into bat by the Australians. Chris Woakes rescued them from an embarrassing total and they managed a score of respectability.
Josh Hazlewood struck in his first over as Jason Roy was dismissed for a duck. That was followed by Alex Hales, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Jos Buttler’s dismissal off consecutive overs with Pat Cummins and Hazlewood claiming the success respectively. Within the first 30 minutes, half the side was back to the pavilion.
Skipper Eoin Morgan and Moeen Ali tried to recover them from the early slump. But the star of the day for the visitors was Chris Woakes. He played a sensational knock of 78 runs comprising of four boundaries and five sixes. Tom Curran supported him well.
While England didn’t last 50 overs, they managed to put up 196 runs on the board. Pat Cummins was the best bowler among the Aussies. The right-arm pacer finished with amazing figures of 4/24. Josh Hazlewood and Andrew Tye also got three wickets each as the hosts put up a spectacular performance.
Australia didn’t find themselves in trouble as they chased a totally gettable score of 197 on this pitch. While David Warner and Cameron White got out early, it was Travis Head who made a mark in this game. The 24-year-old went on to score a spectacular century.
This was only his second ODI century. Even as the likes of skipper Steve Smith and other Aussies faltered, Travis Head remained firm and continued the flow of runs. In the end, Australia managed to win the game quite comfortably. They chased the target losing five wickets with more than 13 overs to spare.

#AUSvENG Dismal Adelaide Oval crowd for Australia Day ODI with traditional rival England. Yes it's a dead rubber but organisers have every right to be very disappointed.

England's worst-ever starts at those loss of wickets in ODIs.

Up yours, Australia. Cameron White is human too. Not his fault the selectors hate Glenn Maxwell, or that he can’t bat. #AUSvENG

Head brings up 1000 ODI runs in his 30th inns. That's quicker than Warner, Smith, Ponting, Jones & Clarke (=8th quickest Aussie) #AUSvENG

Cummins took one more wicket than Hazlewood but JH gets man of the match for me. Four batsmen gave PC their wickets. #AusvEng

If Head manages to make 100 in a chase of <200 then that's pretty nifty. #ausveng
