The crowd witnessed the first game of the Tri-series at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Aussies managed to get the better of the New Zealanders in a rain-interrupted game. Australia elected to bowl first and their bowlers put up a magnificent effort restricting the visitors to 117/9 in their quota of 20 overs.
Billy Stanlake who was playing his second game rose to the occasion with wickets on his first two balls. Both openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munro were sent back to the pavilion. He came back in the second over to account for the wicket of Tom Bruce as Australia were reduced to 16/3.
The batsmen who followed couldn’t do much as skipper Kane Williamson was also dismissed cheaply. The likes of Ross Taylor and Tom Blundell tried to show intent at the crease but their innings didn’t last long either. It was only Colin de Grandhomme’s stellar performance with the bat which raised the Kiwi spirits.
The all-rounder smashed 38 (24)* as his innings meant New Zealand managed to put up something with 117 runs on board. While Stanlake got three top-order wickets, it was Andrew Tye who had the best figures in the match. He got four scalps as he didn’t allow the tailenders to create any kind of trouble. Spinners Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar also got a wicket each.
As for Australia, they began with a revised target due to the rain interruption. D’Arcy Short failed to make much of a difference while David Warner continued his poor run. Within a space of three balls, Australia were 10/2 chasing 95. Tim Southee and Trent Boult didn’t want to give this up without a fight.
Both Chris Lynn and Glenn Maxwell provided much of a spectacle to the crowd. Known to be splendid hitters, both combined for a partnership of 77 runs from just 53 balls. While Lynn got out, Maxwell made sure he stayed to hit the winning runs as Australia won by 7 wickets with more than 3 overs to spare.
Here we present to you some of the Twitter reactions from today’s game:
Maxwell and Lynn together winning a white ball game for Aust is, in its way, like seeing Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins together at last #AUSvNZ

People smiling is good to watch
Different attitude without a selfish captain making it about him
Warner should skip all forms#AUSvNZ

On paper that Australian top four is scary – David Warner, D'Arcy Short, Chris Lynn and Glenn Maxwell. #AUSvNZ

That stepping over the rope rule is ridiculous. Blokes used to lean on the fence after taking catches back in the day. #AUSvNZ

Boult to Warner. This should be good #AUSvNZ
— Davis Harrigan (@DeadlineDavis) February 3, 2018
Jimmy Anderson – Australia have no dangerous bowlers apart from Starc, Cummins & Hazlewood who can bowl express.
Billy Stanlake – Hold my beer dickhead. #AUSvNZ— Roberto (@chadnotweet) February 3, 2018
This Australian T20I batting line up is ridiculously exciting to watch. Massive potential for the 2020 T20 World Cup #AUSvNZ

Disappointed Maxxy didn't go the reverse slog-sweep first up. #ausvnz

Does anyone else think Sodhi's arm is bent? #AUSvNZ

In KP, Nine looks like it's found its long lost ingredient: a South African Pom spouting over-excited gibberish. #AUSvNZ
— Tony Tea (@AfterGrogBlog) February 3, 2018
If Australia manage to screw this up after the excellent job their bowlers have done I will just about lose it. #AUSvNZ
— Zubeda Ismail (@zubedaismail) February 3, 2018
Who do i want to watch bat? Alex Carey 100% ?#AUSvNZ
— Bec (@BeckyO_98) February 3, 2018
Another Dave Warner special. Can we stop pretending Warner is a T20 guy anymore. #AUSvNZ
— Nobody Important (@MrHoffalicious) February 3, 2018
Just not enough to defend. even with early wickets Aus are still well on top. #AUSvNZ
— Llennodo Luap (@podiesel) February 3, 2018
That’s some pretty dumb batting from the Australian openers there. Almost like they’re wanting to let us back into the game… #AUSvNZ
— Michael Appleton (@michelappleton) February 3, 2018
David Warner couldn't time an egg at the moment #AUSvNZ
— Iorek (@OdiumAmentis) February 3, 2018
Michael Clarke just called Ian Healy “healso”… I’m going to bed #AUSvNZ

This Black Sydney BBL team has a surprisingly large number of international players. #AUSvNZ
— Dan Liebke (@LiebCricket) February 3, 2018
Why are we chasing 95 (15) @ OVER 6 an over but they made 117 (20) at LESS then 6 an over?? #AUSvNZ #fuckoffduckworth
— Swannie (@Swannie22119385) February 3, 2018
Is there anything Ashton Agar can't do? Apart from score a test ton on debut, obviously. #AUSvNZ
— Doctor Fiveball (@DoctorFiveball) February 3, 2018
Time for the selectors to get serious, David Warner needs to be dropped. Has had a terrible summer. They can't seriously take him to SA in this form. Needs to go find runs somewhere #AUSvNZ
— Jack Ansell (@jackansell21) February 3, 2018
Ha! Billy Stanlake is tall. Ha ha ha. Tall. Brilliant. #AUSvNZ
— Dan Liebke (@LiebCricket) February 3, 2018
Really good effort from ICC 7th ranked minnows Australia in their first match of the T20 tri-series against the 2nd and 4th ranked teams. Try hard, lads. Everyone will be supporting you underdogs. #AUSvNZ
— Dan Liebke (@LiebCricket) February 3, 2018
This only needs nicknames on the players shirts and a cameo from Joey Johns and we'd be back in the T20 dark ages.#AUSvNZ
— Richard Hinds (@rdhinds) February 3, 2018
No KP there isn't a better partnership. Lynn + Maxwell is T20 batting porn #AUSvNZ
— Ash (@Tenash921) February 3, 2018
Hearing commentators say, 'cricket shots' does my absolute dome in. The blokes are playing cricket, what else would they be ? #AUSvNZ
— Shaun Kennedy (@ShaunAidsBurger) February 3, 2018
That was the sixth time in his T20I career that Tye has bowled the last over. 2 is the fewest runs he's conceded and tonight was the first time he picked up more than one wicket in the final over #AusvNZ

Watching Santner from side-on he really does have a strange action. #AusvNZ
— Rick Eyre on cricket (@rickeyrecricket) February 3, 2018
Stupidly, New Zealand have brought Maxwell and Lynn to the crease at the same time. #AUSvNZ
— Dan Liebke (@LiebCricket) February 3, 2018
What are you expecting from David Warner? #AUSvNZ pic.twitter.com/6mzbQJJJyw

Two wickets in two balls for Billy Stanlake. ⚡
What a dream start for Australia.#AUSvNZ#OrangeArmy#LiveOrange— SunRisers Hyderabad (@SunRisers) February 3, 2018
I find myself wishing AJ Tye never plays for Australia again just so I no longer have to hear about his knuckle ball. #AUSvNZ
— J.R. (@Straffo) February 3, 2018
Facts the commentators know about Tye:
1. He has a knuckleball
2. His knuckleball is a good variation
3. That’s it#AUSvNZ— Cat Jones (@Cricketbatcat) February 3, 2018
He might have hit 107 sixes before this in Australia but this was Chris Lynn's first six at the @SCG in T20s.#AUSvNZ
— Nikhil Mane ??? (@nikhiltait) February 3, 2018
I would have both Lynn and Maxwell in my test team. #AUSvNZ

The bails don't even light up. What medieval bullshit is this?#AUSvNZ #raindelay
