The first Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan is moving at a breathtaking pace and is finely poised after the end of play on the second day as Paksitani skipper Babar Azam registered a majestic ton to bail his team out from a perilous position in the first innings after some exceptional bowling by spinner Prabath Jayasuriya.

After dismissing Pakistan for 218 runs in reply to their first innings tally of 222, Sri Lanka finished the day with 36/1, with a lead of 40 runs. The hosts will be ruing the dismissal of skipper Dimuth Karunaratne just before the end of the day’s play.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan resumed from their overnight score of 28/2 and were pegged back instantly as they lost Azhar Ali on the third delivery of the day. Skipper Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan consolidated for the visitors before the latter was dismissed by an innocuous delivery going down the leg side.

With wickets tumbling at one end, Pakistan were reeling at 112/8 and were looking like conceding a considerable lead in the first innings. But skipper Babar Azam defied the Sri Lankan bowlers and stitched a valuable partnership with the tail to take Pakistan close to the host’s first innings total. He registered his seventh Test century in the process, probably his best of the lot, as he carried the team on his young shoulders under tremendous pressure.

Sri Lanka’s latest spin bowling sensation can do no wrong at the moment

While the Pakistani skipper was the star of the show with the bat in hand, Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya is making Test cricket look ridiculously easy. The 30-year-old, who was the hero of the second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia in the recently concluded Test series, once again spun a web around the batters with his exceptional bowling. He ended with figures of 5/82, his third five-wicket haul in as many appearances, which is mindblowing for a bowler playing just his second Test.

Meanwhile, here’s how Twitter reacted to the proceedings:
