We are certainly in for a few surprises with the current bunch of boys playing for the Bangladesh cricket team. The tigers shocked the entire cricketing fraternity by qualifying for the elite ICC Champions Trophy ahead of West Indies. The ‘once upon a time’ mighty West Indies have not qualified for the ‘mini World Cup’. The cricket fraternity got another shock when Bangladesh defeated New Zealand at Clontarf Cricket Club Ground, Dublin.

Though many regulars were missing the New Zealand roster but it does not take away credit from Bangladesh to beat them in conditions they are not very familiar with. Winning the toss, Mashrafe Mortaza decided to let the Kiwis bat first. The Black Caps lost Luke Ronchi early but captain Tom Latham and Neil Broom steadied their innings.

Latham played the captain’s knock scoring 84 runs in 92 balls. Broom gave him solid support by scoring 63 runs. Ross Taylor scored a quickfire 60 to take New Zealand’s total to 270. The spinners for Bangladesh – Shakib Al Hasan and Nasir Hossain bowled well and picked up two wickets each. Captain Mashrafe was the other bowler to get two scalps.

Coming into bat, Bangladesh lost Soumya Sarkar early. Sarkar was dismissed by Jeetan Patel for a golden duck. But Sabbir Rahman and the experienced Tamim Iqbal set up a good partnership which helped Bangladesh cruise towards the target. After Sabbir’s dismissal, Saikat was not able to cement the innings. Neither was Shakib, but wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah played a good hand in securing the victory for the team.

Rahim was just 5 runs short of his half ton while Mahmudullah scored quickfire 46 at a strike rate of over 125. His innings comprised of 6 boundaries and a lone six. After this victory, the fans are flooding Twitter with tweets regarding the match. After this win, the Bangladesh fans are confident about their team’s campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy.
