Upul Tharanga won the toss on a Dambulla track which had its fair share of cracks and dryness. The pitch report, given by former Sri Lankan cricketer Russel Arnold deemed the venue as a low-scoring one.
Sri Lanka’s opening batsman Niroshan Dickwella was out of this game as he is still serving his ban after the incident with South African quick Kagiso Rabada. For the visitors, offie Mehdi Hasan made his debut after his heroic performance in the visitors’ historic Test victory.
Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar opened the innings for the visitors. The home side made the first breakthrough through their fast bowler Suranga Lakmal, who dismissed Sarkar for ten runs.
A 90-run partnership between Sabbir Rahman and Tamim helped the visitors to get off to a good start before the home captain Tharanga plucked off a beautiful catch to dismiss Sabbir for 54 runs.
Bangladesh wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim walked out to bat with the total reading 119 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. The keepers’ dismissal did not affect the Tigers’ performance as a 5th wicket partnership saw them roaring past 250 runs, with Tamim Iqbal getting off to his 8th ODI century.
On the other hand, Shakib Al Hassan’s 72 runs gave the platform for the Bangladesh lower order batsmen to attack. The centurion was dismissed at 124 after his low shot was found by the fielder at the deep.
Mosaddek Hossain’s cameo of 24 runs from 9 balls ensured that the visitors got past the elusive total of 300. As rightly pointed out by a Twitter user – ‘No target of above 300 has been successfully chased in Sri Lanka.’
Early wickets of opener Gunthalika and Kusal Mendis ensured that the visitors got off to a great start in the second innings. Taskin Ahmed removed the Sri Lankan captain Tharanga for 19 runs to leave the Islanders reeling at 31/3.
Asela Gunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal walked out to form a 56 run partnership before the former was dismissed by Shakib. The innings by Dinesh Chandimal left this particular Twitter user in splits:
Debutant Mehedi Hasan soon dismissed Dinesh Chandimal for a well made 59 runs. Mustafizur Rahman too soon joined the party with the wicket of Siriwardana. Captain Mashrafe Mortaza was quick to dismiss Pathirana before Mustafizur returned to dismiss Lakmal.
Sandakan too was dismissed by the left-arm quick with a direct hit to leave Sri Lankan hopes hanging in the thin air at 232-9.
This is how Twitter reacted to the performance of the visitors:
Mustafizur Rahman now has 33 ODI wickets – most by ANY bowler in his first 12 ODIs!#SLvBAN
