If reports are to be believed, the jersey No.10 which belonged to Sachin Tendulkar may be retired by the Board Of Control For Cricket In India. Many Indian players have shown their unwillingness to don the jersey number as a mark of respect for the legend.

Sachin Tendulkar played his farewell match at the Wankhede Stadium in 2013. The No.10 jersey debate came into consideration recently when Shardul Thakur flaunted it in the Sri Lankan tour. Many fans criticised the same and termed it as disrespect to the legend.

Shardul Thakur had to literally state the reason of him choosing the No.10 as his jersey number. The 26-year-old found himself at the wrong despite no fault of his own and the BCCI thus feels, that it adds pressure on youngsters.

“It’s a very individual choice. If players don’t want to wear a certain number, one can’t force them. ICC might just tell you that a team can’t officially retire a jersey but it would never tell you that it’s mandatory to wear that number,” a BCCI official told PTI.

He further cleared the air that there was no official announcement regarding jersey no. 10 being retired. He told that while it was an individual choice, it’s not mandatory to wear that number.

“The BCCI has not taken any such call (retiring the No.10 jersey). It’s a very informal thing among players. Also you don’t want young players to be abused like it happened with Shardul Thakur,”

However, his IPL team Mumbai Indians did retire jersey number 10 in his honour. Twitterati was divided over the issue. While some felt it was a brilliant way to show some respect for the master, majority felt that it was an inconsequential move. Others were busy discussing different jersey numbers that could be retired while the trolls had a field day.
