In what was a rain-marred day, the Indian bowlers did a wonderful job to have the Kiwis reeling at stumps on Day 2. India began the day being at 239/7. Wriddhiman Saha hit a timely half century as the hosts managed to cross the 300 hurdle.
Mohammad Shami managed to hang in there for a bit before Matt Henry pulled off a fantastic catch. Saha stayed not out on 54 as India were all out for 316. The Kiwi bowlers did a splendid job with Henry being the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets. Neil Wagner, Trent Boult and Jeetan Patel all got a couple of wickets each while Santner also managed to get one wicket.
The visitors had a poor start as they were reduced to 23/3. Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck gold as they managed to rip off New Zealand’s top order inside 7 overs. From there on, captain Ross Taylor and Luke Ronchi tried to build a foundation but Ravindra Jadeja had Ronchi trapped in front of the stumps.
Later on after the rain interruption, Bhuvneshwar bowled a spectacular spell as he got his first five-wicket haul in India. The Kiwi batting order toppled back to the pavilion in a jiffy. At the end of the day, New Zealand were completely on the backfoot as they trailed by 188 runs with just 3 wickets in hand.
India had a great day as they registered a complete turnaround from what situation the match was on Day 1. If things go well, India could well be back at the No.1 position in Tests. New Zealand would be eager to stage a fight back here on to save the game. All these events have set up for an exciting Day 3 at the Eden Gardens.

Twitter had words of praise for Saha’s gritty knock in the end. Bhuvneshwar was also lauded for a rollicking spell after being left out for the first game. Guptill was heavily criticised for his poor run. Here are some of the Twitter reactions that took place during the course of the day:
Taking a fifer isn't easy task for a fast bowler specially in India, well done Bhuvi @BhuviOfficial @BCCI #swing

Unbelievable. Kohli is getting criticised for dropping Bhuvi last match. The man himself said now he doesn't get such decks often in India.

Virat and Kumble always talk about horses for courses. Got it absolutely right by bringing in Bhuvi. #indvsnz

India in firm control. Makes u think that if the overs weren't lost NZ would have been all out today.Still 3 days left lots of time.#indvsnz

The best part of India's dominance in this game is the fact these aren't 'typical' Indian conditions. Top drawer stuff. #IndvNZ

NZ batsmen made hapless by overcast conditions. Shami's been real quick and Bhuvi's bowled superby for 5-wicket haul. End of innings is nigh

Indian pacers ruling the rooster at home is such a rare sight. #INDvNZ

Fourth five wicket haul for Bhuvi…1st one on home soil. Team's call to pick Bhuvi over Umesh justified. Credit. ?????

This 300 is becoming a disease now. I hope we get two proper batsmen in instead and start reaching 450s.

Another example of why DRS is good – Jadeja wouldn't have reacted so angrily with it. He'd have either challenged or kept silent. #INDvNZ

@bopmafia never trust 7% strength beer

When you have Raval scoring so many runs in domestic cricket, why are the Kiwis so obsessed with Guptill?
— Bharath Ramaraj (@Fancricket12) October 1, 2016
Indian lower Order getting runs and Indian seamers getting early wickets which is bonus for India considering their actual strengths…

Ross Taylor has hopefully hypnotised Guptill into thinking this is a T20. #indvnz

Haha the face of @trent_boult for that wicket! Priceless. Great catch by Matt Henry for @BLACKCAPS #INDvNZ pic.twitter.com/xZaGMZxQ5x

Wah Saha! Strokeful half century has helped India reach 316, not an easy score to surmount on a pitch which is helping bowlers #INDvNZ

Took body blows…battled the tough session last night and today. Well done, Saha. Runs from the keeper are always critical. #IndvNZ

Indian lower order covering for Virat Kohli and other top order batsmen failures…Refreshing change #INDvsNZ

What a player Wridhiman Saha is. Performs when the chips are down #indvsnz

Except Shami, all the other 10 Indian players in this #IndvsNZ Test average more than 20.
