Guyana Amazon Warriors went up to the fourth spot in the 2021 CPL after their 17-run win over the Saint Lucia Kings at the Warner Park in St Kitts. The Kings, in the meantime, stayed at the third spot with eight points from as many games in the league.

King shepherds the Warriors

After batting first, the Warriors managed to score 151 runs for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs. Opening batter Chandrapaul Hemraj, Shimron Hetmyer and Shoaib Malik perished in the single digits with the Warriors’ score at 17 for three in 3.5 overs.

However, Brandon King steadied the ship for the Warriors. The right-hander scored 77 runs off 57 balls with the help of eight fours and three sixes. Obed McCoy cut short his stay in the middle. Nicholas Pooran and Odean Smith also played handy cameos.

Tim David’s knock in vain

In the run-chase, the Kings lost Andre Fletcher, Faf du Plessis and Samit Patel with 43 runs on the board. The team, however, was up with the required rate. Thereafter, Roston Chase and Tim David stitched together a 77-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Naveen-ul-Haq separated them, getting rid of Chase. David stayed unbeaten on 47 off 42, but couldn’t take his team over. Gudakesh Motie was excellent as he picked up the wickets of Faf and Patel. Moreover, he bowled one maiden and gave 12 runs.

We thought it was a par total: Faf du Plessis

After the win, Warriors’ skipper Nicholas Pooran said that his team was lucky to have won despite dropping catches. Du Plessis, on the other hand, reckoned that his side could have chased the target down.

“Catches do win matches but fortunately, we came out on the winning side. I thought we had a chance with 160. We knew that the pitch had help for the spinners and we had many of them. It’s tough with a short boundary at one end. All the bowlers were really good. It was an important win,” Pooran said.

“We played well for 15 overs (with the bat) but that’s the thing with this format. It’s important to bat well all the way through. They bowled really well at the back end. We thought it was a par total. It was gettable,” Du Plessis was quoted as saying.
