Rangpur Rangers, after their 105-run at the hands of Cumilla Warriors, have now lost back-to-back matches in the Bangabandhu BPL. This time around, Mahmudullah’s Chattogram Challengers defeated them by six wickets. The Rangers also have the worst net run rate of -3.01 amongst the teams. On the contrary, the Challengers made amends after tasting defeat against Khulna Tigers.

Naim wages a lone battle

The Rangers mostly strained to find momentum in their innings. Yet, they managed 157 in their 20 overs, owing to Mohammad Naim’s incredible 54-ball 78. The southpaw was there until the 18th over and made sure that his team put up a competitive score on the board. Naim smacked six fours and three sixes, and eventually fell prey to Rubel Hossain. The Rangers lost wickets at quick intervals.

Mohammad Shahzad, Tom Abell and Jahurul Islam perished cheaply, putting pressure on Naim. But the youngster didn’t drop the gun and scored a fifty off 26 balls before capitalizing on the start. Skipper Mohammad Nabi scored a 12-ball 21 after which Kesrick Williams accounted for his wicket. Mahmudullah had a decent day with the leather, having dismissed Islam and giving away 17 runs.

Too easy for the Challengers

Chadwick Walton (50) and Avishka Fernando (37) made sure that the Challengers had no early jitters. The duo stitched together a stand of 68 runs off a mere 43 balls to put Chattogram on the driver’s seat. Lewis Gregory gave the Rangers a breather, nipping out Fernando, who was looking ominous, having hit a fours and three sixes. Walton accomplished his half-century off 26 deliveries.

Nabi picked him up to give the Rangers their second breakthrough. Mahmudullah couldn’t make much of an impact, managing a 16-ball 15. Imrul Kayes, on the other hand, carried on with his good form. The left-hander played until the very end and remained unbeaten on 44 off 33 with three fours and a couple of sixes. In the end, the Challengers chased down the target with 10 balls left.

Here is how Twitterati lauded the Challengers
