Veteran India pacer Jhulan Goswami finally brought curtains down on her illustrious international career and did it in style as the Women in Blue overcame England in a low-scoring thriller by 16 runs at the Lord's Cricket Ground on Saturday, Septemer 24 to sweep the series 3-0.
It was indeed a memorable day for Jhulan as she succeeded in picking up a wicket in the last over of her spell in international cricket when she castled tail-ender Kate Cross. More importantly, the speedster was given a standing ovation when she walked out to bat in the first innings as the English players stood in two separate lines while Goswami walked from the centre as they all applauded her. Apart from that, the crowd at Lord's also gave a standing ovation to the legendary cricketer.
A memorable day for Jhulan Goswami
Even though Jhulan was dismissed for a golden duck and India were bundled out for a paltry 169 in the 46th over, the tall fast bowler was determined to end her career on a high by adding a few more wickets to her tally. She showed a lot of grit while bowling and was rewarded with the wickets of Alice Capsey and Kate Cross to finish her economic spell with figures of 2/30 from her 10 overs at an economy rate of just three including three maidens.
The match finished when spin bowling all-rounder Deepti Sharma smartly ran out a well-set Charlotte Dean at the non-strikers' end. Jhulan Goswami has been one of the backbones of Indian women's cricket for the last two decades ever since she made her debut in Chennai against England in 2002. She has represented India in 10 World Cups (five ODI and T20Is each) and to-date remains the highest wicket-taker in the quadrennial event with 43 scalps to her name.
Apart from being a part of all of India's six Women's Asia Cup triumphs, the versatile cricketer was an integral member of the Women in Blue's two World Cup final appearances in 2005 and 2017 respectively. Goswami has finished with 355 international scalps to her name which is a record in women's cricket history.
Here's how the cricketng fraternity reacted to her retirement:
