Courtesy of Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto’s brilliance at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Bangladesh picked up an incredible win over Afghanistan in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. After losing to Sri Lanka by five wickets in their opening game of the tournament, the Shakib Al Hasan-led side was under incredible pressure as a loss could have thrown them out of the competition. Keeping that in mind, the Bangla Tigers played some incredible cricket and picked up an 89-run win.

Notably, Miraz hit 112 runs and was forced to retire, while Shanto hit 104 runs off 105 deliveries. After they got back to the dressing room, Shakib Al Hasan took the matter into his own hands and hit 32* runs off just 18 deliveries. Courtesy of his incredible cameo, Bangladesh managed to hit 334 runs in 50 overs.

With the ball, Rashid Khan once again had a pretty ordinary match as he leaked 66 runs in ten overs. Other bowlers, too, failed to step up, and that created a major problem for the batters in the second innings.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who recently hit a cracking century against Pakistan, failed to make a mark, but his opening partner Ibrahim Zadran was phenomenal. The 21-year-old hit 75 runs off 74 deliveries, while skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi hit 51 runs in the middle. They were trying to pull off a miracle in Lahore and were building up well but, unfortunately, couldn’t get the job done. After they walked back to the pavilion, wickets fell like a house of cards and with that, Afghanistan lost their opening game of the tournament.

With the ball, Taskin Ahmed picked up four wickets, while Shoriful Islam picked up three. Meanwhile, despite the win, Bangladesh’s qualification isn’t secured at the moment and will depend on the result of Sri Lanka versus Afghanistan on September 5 in Lahore.
