Delhi Capitals found a hero during their IPL 2023 clash against Mumbai Indians when star Indian all-rounder Axar Patel took the attack to the Mumbai bowlers to compile a blistering half-century, his first in the Indian Premier League. He ended a run of 91 innings without a half-century, the second longest in the competition.
The home side were in all sorts of trouble when Axar Patel walked into bat in the 13th over of the match, with the team losing half of their batters without even breaching the three-figure mark in the first innings. With his skipper David Warner struggling for fluency from the other end, Axar upped the scoring rate after dispatching Hrithik Shokeen for consecutive sixes in the 15th over.
He continued to pile the pressure on the Mumbai bowlers as he smashed Cameron Green for two boundaries in the next over. His stay at the crease got even better in the 17th over when he took down Jason Behrendorff for two consecutive sixes, the second being a fortuitous boundary as his national teammate Suryakumar Yadav made an absolute meal of a regulation chance.
However, there wasn't any stopping the Delhi man as he dispatched Meredith for two boundaries in the next over to bring up a 22-ball half-century, his first in the competition. Unfortunately, his innings came to an end in the penultimate over of the first innings, landing a huge dent in the hosts' chances of getting to a challenging total.
The home side completely lost the plot after his departure as they lost their last five wickets in just ten deliveries to drag themselves to a par total of 172 runs in their batting innings.
