Andhra skipper Hanuma Vihari was seen batting left-handed during an ongoing Ranji Trophy quarter-final clash against Madhya Pradesh at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Vihari took a blow on his wrist and suffered a fracture on Day 1 of the clash while facing Avesh Khan.
The right-hander was struck by a menacing bouncer by Khan, and had to walk off the field while batting on 16 off 37 balls. The medical team of the Andhra side assessed the situation and scans revealed that the skipper had indeed suffered a wrist fracture as confirmed by an official.
“Vihari has opted for a sling for now and is waiting. If the team requires him, he would step out. It’s a proper fracture and he has been advised five-six weeks of rest,” an Andhra team official told as quoted by Sportstar.
Despite the official statement, the 29-year-old batter resumed his innings on Day 2 fighting his wrist injury after his side had lost nine wickets during the morning session with the team’s total at 353. Notably, the skipper who took the onus of batting left-handed and hit two fours after taking the field which came off Avesh Khan and another off Kumar Kartikey.
Following Vihari’s injury blow, the middle-order batters - Ricky Bhui and Karan Shinde relished magnificent innings with scores of 115* and 83 runs respectively to steer the side to attain a total of 262/2 at the end of Day 1. On the second day, the duo continued to carve out a well-built innings but were eventually dismissed with Ricky scoring 149 and Karan sent packing for 110 runs.
Following their dismissals, the rest of the batting unit toppled and are just a wicket away from concluding the innings. With the score set final at 379/9, Vihari's team would look to contain Madhya Pradesh cheaply.
