Australia's man for big occasions, Steve Smith, once again proved his undeniable credentials in the longest format of the game after registering a remarkable century against India on the second day of the World Test Championship Final at The Oval. The Australian batting ace has overtaken Matthew Hayden in the list of most centuries for Australia and is only behind batting greats Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting.

Smith, who was a bit scratchy in the initial part of his innings on the opening day of the WTC Final, got into the groove as the ball got older in the last two sessions of the day. While his batting partner, Travis Head, hogged the limelight with a blistering century, Smith went under the radar from the other end.

The Australian ace, who resumed his innings just five short of a century, needed just two deliveries on the second day to breach the 100-run mark. He smashed Mohammed Siraj for consecutive boundaries in the first over of the day to register his 31st Test ton. Incidentally, it was also his ninth ton against India, joining fellow batting star Joe Root as the two batters with the most centuries against the Asian outfit.

Smith's defiant century also meant that he has now got the joint-second most hundred on English soil, and is only behind the iconic Don Bradman on this list. His mammoth 285-run stand for the fourth wicket along with Travis Head, the highest fourth wicket partnership at the venue, eventually came to a halt after Head's dismissal.

Afraid that was a hundred gifted to Steve Smith this morning. He would have spent a lot of time thinking of getting there and he got presented two volleys. A nice way to cap a fabulous, controlled innings.
