England finished Day 1 of the fourth Test in a good position as they were on 302/7 at stumps with Joe Root (106* off 226) and Ollie Robinson (31* off 60) at the crease. Earlier in the day, England captain, Ben Stokes, won his second toss of the series and elected to bat first.
Opener Zak Crawley got off to a brisk start to his innings scoring 42 (42) as England reached 47 without losing any wickets. Debutant Akash Deep (3/70) got into the act sending Ben Duckett (11 off 21), Ollie Pope (0 off 2) and Crawley back to the pavilion. Jonny Bairstow (38 off 35) once again gave away his start while Ben Stokes (3 off 6) departed cheaply leaving England reeling at 112/5 in the first session of the day.
After quick blows, Joe Root and Ben Foakes stabilized the innings with their 113-run stand while, Ollie Robinson also made a valuable contribution of 31* (60).

The 27-year-old seamer was right on the money on his international debut as he troubled England opener Zak Crawley with the uneven bounce off the surface. He even breached through the opener's defence to send his off-stump cartwheeling towards the wicketkeeper in just his second over. However, he ended up overstepping while delivering the ball which cost him his first Test scalp.
2. Akash Deepโs menacing spell after the no-ball
After missing his first Test wicket due to a no-ball, Akash made a brilliant comeback as he dismissed Ben Duckett caught behind and trapped Ollie Pope in front during his 5th over. He further castled Zak Crawley again with a similar delivery as his no-ball and picked three wickets in his first spell.

3. Ravichandran Ashwin picks his 100th Test wicket against England
After entering the 500-club in Rajkot, Ravichandran Ashwin further picked his 100th Test wicket against England. The off-spinner trapped a well-set Jonny Bairstow (38 off 35) in front of the stumps as he failed to connect a sweep helping Ashwin complete his century against England.

4. Mohammed Siraj breaks a massive stand for India
The right-arm seamer made a brilliant comeback after leaking 43 runs in his first six overs as he broke the crucial 113-run stand between Joe Root (106* off 226) and Ben Foakes (47 off 126). He first got rid of Foakes getting him caught at short mid-wicket, and further dismantled Tom Hartleyโs stumps with a peach of a delivery from around the wicket, which nipped away viciously off the deck. Siraj finished the day with figures of 2/60 in 13 overs.

5. Joe Root ends his century drought
Star England batter Joe Root finally shut his critics with a brilliant hundred after being criticized in the first three Tests for his low scores and unconventional approach. Before the fourth Test, Root had scored just 77 runs in the series, and he made a brilliant comeback with his innings of 106* (226) with the help of nine fours.
Here are some of the reactions on Day 1 :
This is more like the Joe Root we know. Can't keep such a class player quiet for long.

275 feels like a very competitive total on this pitch โฆ at 112 for 5 England looked well short but common sense arrived and England are now back in the game โฆ #INDvENG

This is the Joe Root mode that win you Test matches! Glue mode. Let the rest play Bazz Ball.

Good start from India. Good fight from Eng. Setting up for a good Test match
Love the talk about Root's shot selection and the concept of bazball. I'd rather watch Root ave 50.3 at a SR 74 than ave 49 at a SR of 54. More reverse ramping please. #Bazball #JoeRoot #INDvENGtest

Debuting as a fast bowler on Indian pitches is never easy, but Akash Deep is certainly making a mark straight away. Well done, boy! ๐ #INDvsENG
