After three consecutive losses, Mumbai Indians (MI) finally earned their first two points in the  Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) with a 29-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday, April 07 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. After being put in to bat first, MI posted a mammoth total of 234/5 with solid contributions from Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan (42 off 23), Hardik Pandya (39 off 33), Tim David (45* off 21) and Romario Shepherd (39* off 10).

Axar Patel was the pick of the bowlers from DC with figures of 2/35 in four overs. In reply, DC got off to a slow start with opener David Warner (10 off 8) getting dismissed cheaply. Prithvi Shaw (66 off 40) and Tristan Stubbs tried their best to keep their team in the game but eventually fell short of the target finishing on 205/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Let’s take a look at the highlights from the match:

1. Rohit Sharma gets MI off to a blistering start

The opening batter was seen at his imperious best on his team’s home ground and took on the bowlers right from the word go. Rohit smashed consecutive boundaries against Ishant Sharma to get his innings going and later smacked a couple of sixes against Jhye Richardson to make his intentions clear. The 36-year-old fell just one run short of his well-deserved half-century as he had to depart for 49 (27) with the help of six fours and three sixes.

2. Romario Shepherd smokes Anrich Nortje for 32 runs in the last over

The West Indies all-rounder walked to the crease with his team looking for a strong finish being at 181/5 after 17.5 overs. Shepherd scored his first boundary on just the second ball of his innings and against Ishant Sharma and later unleashed his wrath on Anrich Nortje by clobbering him for four sixes and two boundaries to propel MI’s score to 234/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Shepherd remained unbeaten on 39* (10) at the end of the innings.

3. Tristan Stubbs’ breathtaking knock goes in vain

The 23-year-old walked to the crease with DC needing 125 runs to win off 47 balls and wasted no time to settle down smashing Piyush Chawla for a couple of sixes in his first six balls. Stubbs kept little hope alive in the DC camp with his quick-fire fifty off just 19 balls but couldn’t take his team over the line. He finished the innings by registering his highest IPL score with a knock of 71* (25) smashing three fours and seven sixes.
