The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday, November 18 sacked the Chetan Sharma headed national selection committee and also invited fresh applications for the same. The decision has come after the Indian team’s semi-final ouster from the recently-concluded T20 World Cup.

Even though India finished as the table-toppers in Group 1 during the Super 12, they were outplayed by the eventual champions England in the semifinal by ten wickets. The humiliating loss raised many questions on the Men in Blue’s approach in the shortest format with experts of the game stating that they are playing conservative cricket in T20Is.

Apart from Chetan Sharma, other members of the committee including the likes of Sunil Joshi, Debasis Mohanty, Harvinder Singh have also been sacked. However, former India pacer Abey Kuruvilla’s tenure had already ended earlier.

Usually, a national team selector gets a four-year term including an extension provided their performances are extremely impressive. But, this committee was in power for only a short duration and it marks one of the shortest stints in the history of Indian cricket.

Nonetheless, when no candidate was appointed after Kuruvilla’s term ended, it came as a sign that the national cricket board wanted to revamp the selection committee completely.

As of now, the deadline for the new candidates to apply for the selectors’ positions has been set for November 28. It remains to be seen who all from the cricketing fraternity would come forward to take up the challenging role as Indian cricket is about to go through a period of transition in T20Is.

During Chetan Sharma’s tenure not only did India fail to do well in multi-nation tournaments but also could not end their ICC title drought. The Indian team finished as the runners-up of the inaugural edition of the ICC World Test Championship last year and were knocked out from the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2021.

India also failed to make the finals of the Asia Cup 2022 and crashed out of Super 4 after defeats against arch-rivals Pakistan and the eventual champions Sri Lanka respectively.
