After an epic bidding war between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals joined the bidding war to get England’s all-rounder Sam Curran into their side. As it touched Rs. 11.50 crores, Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings joined the war and kept raising the stakes high, while giving tough competition to Rajasthan Royals.

The focus then shifted to CSK and PBKS, but just when the latter had him, Lucknow Super Giants raised the stakes even higher. Mumbai Indians, who exited the race jumped back in when the bidding amount crossed the value of Rs. 16 crores. The all-rounder was finally purchased by Punjab Kings for a whopping sum of Rs. 18.50 crores.

Registered at a base price of Rs. 2 crores, Curran’s price touched the roof within minutes as three teams competed towards the end to get the world-cup winning player. The 24-year-old, who represented CSK in the 2020 and the 2021 editions of the tournament, became the most expensive English player in the history of the Indian Premier League. Not just that, he became the most expensive player in the history of IPL, surpassing Chris Morris’ Rs. 16.25 crores mark.

Curran, who had been at his best during the T20 World Cup 2022 became one of the biggest attractions of IPL 2023. The all-rounder missed the previous edition owing to his injury but returned back to international cricket in a brilliant manner. He picked up a five-wicket haul in England’s very first game of the T20 World Cup 2022 against Afghanistan, becoming the first-ever English player to do so in T20Is.

He had picked up a hat-trick while playing for the Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings) during IPL 2019. He became just the third player from the franchise to achieve the feat, after Yuvraj Singh and Axar Patel. He registered the 18th hat-trick of the IPL back then and helped his side clinch a brilliant win against Delhi.

That game helped him gain the spotlight, and he has been at his best with the bat as well as with the ball in the tournament since then. The upcoming edition of the IPL will see Curran going back to the franchise where it all started.
