Afghanistan’s hopes in the T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12 stages came to an end as they were beaten by Sri Lanka comprehensively at the Gabba in Brisbane. Dhananjaya de Silva’s batting brilliance along with Hasaranga’s brutal spell with the ball was enough for Sri Lanka to outclass Afghanistan in a must-win encounter for both sides.

Earlier in the game, Afghanistan got to a decent start in the powerplay as their openers put on a partnership of 42 for the first wicket. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the aggressor hitting two sixes and two fours in his 24-ball 28 while Usman Ghani scored a run-a-ball 27. Ibrahim Zadran provided the momentum with an 18-ball 22 and it looked like Afghanistan had the perfect foil to catch onto in the last ten overs.

Wanindu Hasaranga restricts Afghanistan to a par score with a top-spell

However, some poor efforts from the middle order meant that the wickets kept tumbling and Sri Lanka managed to pull things back with a disciplined bowling effort. In the end, Afghanistan ended up with 144 for 8 in their 20 overs which was way below than they would have expected to at the halfway mark. For Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 13 in his four overs while Lahiru Kumara picked up two crucial wickets.

In reply, Sri Lanka managed to chase down the score easily despite losing Pathum Nissanka early. Kusal Mendis struggled to get going in his 25-run knock, however, the likes of Dhananjaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka stuck around for long and managed to keep the chase going. The third-wicket partnership almost took Afghanistan away from the game and Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s 14-ball 18 proved to be crucial in the end

De Silva finally lived up to his potential by ending up with an unbeaten 66-run knock as Sri Lanka won the game with six wickets in hand and nine balls to spare. The Island nation is still in contention for a spot in the semis while Afghanistan is out of the equation now.
