The much-awaited auction of the Women’s Premier League finally got underway on February 13 (Monday). A total of 449 women superstars will be going under the hammer in Mumbai. However, one of the most awaited names from the Indian Women’s team to come up at the auction was that of the swashbuckling opener Shafali Verma.

The 19-year-old recently led India to a major triumph as the team won the U19 women’s T20 World Cup. It was Indian women’s first-ever major tournament victory other than the Asia Cup. Notably, Shafali, the Indian captain, finished the tournament as the third-highest run-scorer, with 172 runs at an average of 24.57 and a strike rate of 193.25 in seven innings. Shafali was also India’s highest run-scorer in the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup, where she scored 163 runs in five innings at an average of 32.60 and a strike rate of 158.25.

As soon as her name came up at the WPL auction, a bidding war began between Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Starting at the base price of INR 50 Lakh, the bidding went up to INR 2 crore with Delhi eventually securing the services of the aggressive opener.

The Haryana-born batter made her international debut in a T20I against South Africa in September 2019. Aged 15 on her debut, she was the youngest-ever cricketer to represent the nation in international cricket. In June 2021, Shafali also became the youngest cricketer to represent India in all three formats of international cricket.

Shafali has played 21 ODIs so far, scoring 531 runs at an average of 26.55 and a strike rate of 83.62, with four half-centuries to her name. She has also represented India in 52 T20Is scoring 1264 runs at an average of 24.78 and a strike rate of 134.46.
